Did you know, that emeralds are twenty times rarer than diamonds?

Emerald on Calcite, from the most famous of all emerald mines, Muzo Mines, Muzo, Boyaca, Colombia. 5 cm. tall by 5 cm. wide (formerly in the James Horner collection, and currently in the collection of Mr. Irv Brown).

In celebration of three new Emerald-adorned arrivals to our vintage Fine Jewels collection, we've rounded up a few of our favourite historical moments, and interesting facts, heralding the beautiful green gem.

Adored the world over for centuries, the earliest records of emeralds trace back 4500 years to Prisse Papyrus, the world’s oldest book.

Much like the wondrous,  Emerald city in The Wizard of Oz,  there is something quite unmatchably magical about the gleaming Emerald stone..

Persian for 'Green Gem' - the Emerald, which also serves as the birthstone for those born in May, has been said to hold such mystical properties as providing intuition and vision, emeralds represent growth, expansion and new beginnings.

The late Princess Diana in her infamous Art Deco Emerald and Diamond Choker, originally owned by Queen Mary.

Interestingly, thanks to its ultra soothing, deep green tone, jewellers, gemologists and gem miners of eras past were said to keep an emerald close by, in turn resting their  strained eyes on it after a long day working on other bright gems.

From Cleopatra to Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy, to, more recently, Zoe Kravitz, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Naomi Campbell, the rare and beautiful Emerald has brought it an honoured status amongst powerful women worldwide.

Zoe Kravitz was quoted to wear these incredible Emeralds as a symbol of hope, at the Golden Globes held during the rise of the 'Time's Up' movement.

“It takes poise and power to compete for attention with the fiery geometry of gemstones,” , wrote British fashion author Hettie Judah in Thomas and Hudson's recent book launch, Emerald. “The women whose histories run through Emerald all exude power–be it political, sexual, financial, or social. Girls can wear pearls, but it takes a woman to wear serious emeralds.”
