An Interview with Model Sakura Matches

Off the back of our latest shoot for our new vintage arrivals, we sat down with model, muse and all around sweetheart, Sakura Matches to talk about what she loves about her job, her philosophy on beauty, health and wellness, and the books currently occupying her bedside table.

Read on for our Q&A with Sakura below, peruse our new vintage pieces here, and keep an eye out for more covetable vintage gems over the coming weeks...

Just launched: Sakura wears the Duchess Pearl Necklace and Earring Set (sold separately).

Tell us, how did you get into modelling and how long have you been in the industry?
I was lucky enough to be scouted by Sarah Tetro who was the owner of 62 management at the time way back when I was still at school and have now been in the industry for 12 years!

What do you love about it the most?
Honestly, I love getting dressed up and being in front of the camera, I love to work with creative teams and different people every day - it makes each day very exciting. It's such a flexible industry and it was great for me while I was studying at University as I would travel and work overseas during my semester breaks and also be able to work on shoots around my study schedule. Since finishing my studies it's allowed and given me the opportunity to easily live and work overseas which I feel so lucky to be able to do as you get to work with bigger clients and have new experiences.

And what about its biggest challenge?
I've had mostly positive experiences working in the industry and I look at a lot of things that have happened in my life as a learning lesson that I value (at least always in hindsight) but one thing that has been challenging to me is overcoming the feeling of loneliness when you are travelling on your own. It's something that a lot of people don't openly talk about, at least I seemed to feel a sense of shame that came with it, but I think it's something that a lot of people have felt when going off to do something out of the "norm" of what your friends and people you know are doing.

With such a breadth of experience, you must have gathered a few tricks of the trade when it comes to makeup and skincare. What are the must have products in your makeup bag, and what's an interesting makeup or skincare tip you've learned on the job that you now swear by?
When it comes to makeup and skincare, skincare always comes first. Take care of your skin and makeup is just used to add a little extra. My must have products in my makeup bag at the moment has got to be an eye brow brush (and actually pro tip - I use pears soap to hold my brows up), my Fenty bronzer and a great mascara. Those are my essentials, I like to keep it simple.

Any top tips or current favourites when it comes to health/self care/fitness?
Self care is SO important, obviously staying in shape, having clear skin and healthy hair is part of my job but it's also something I'm lucky to be so passionate about! For me, self care comes from within, I feel my absolute best when I'm eating well, staying hydrated, moving my body and spending enough time with my close friends. There are always products and experiences you can go buy, like I love a massage/day at a spa or purchasing something special for myself, but truly the things that make me feel my best are the simple things and I know when I'm looking after myself and finding balance that way I'm less stressed and it really shows in my skin, body and wellbeing.

The Vintage Celine Triomphe Saddle Bag in immaculately kept Canvas and Leather, and just the right size for holding everything you need, shop it here.

What are your secrets to taking a great shot - be it photo or video?

Feeling confident in yourself and of course great lighting can make a whole lot of difference! You want to be near natural light.

What piece do you have your eye on the most from our current collection?
I love your 'classic and simple, yet are a statement' earrings, I have always loved your Olympia Aira Hoop earrings. They're so beautiful!

Sakura wears a very rare pair of Christian Lacroix Sweetheart Earrings, shop them here.

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to in your downtime?
I just finished listening to Where the Crawdads Sing and it was so good, I absolutely loved it! I am currently listening to an audio book Why we sleep - which is very interesting! I like to listen to it before I hop into bed to relax. And I'm also reading Normal People...I know I'm quite late to the bandwagon but I must read it before I watch it!
